There are a few reasons why you may have to update your micro:bit firmware, but the most common reason is that the .hex file will not download to the micro:bit. Typically, when a .hex file is downloading, the yellow light on the back of the micro:bit will blink. If the yellow light does not blink during the download process, there is a good chance your firmware is out of date.
