To use the Hummingbird Bit with the programming languages Snap!, Python, or Java, the Bit must be connected to the computer via USB or Bluetooth.
If you are using a Mac or Chromebook with built-in Bluetooth, you can connect wirelessly to the Bit without additional equipment. Please note that Java cannot be used with Chromebooks.
If you are using a Chromebook without built-in Bluetooth, you can connect to the Bit via the USB cord that is included in the kit. The Hummingbird controller must remain connected to the USB cord at all times to run your programs. This works only with the programming language Snap!.
If you are using a Windows computer, you can connect to the Bit via the USB cord that is included in the kit. The Hummingbird controller must remain connected to the USB cord at all times to run your Snap!, Python, or Java programs.
To connect using Bluetooth with Windows machines, you will need the Bluetooth USB dongle. This allows your robots to not be connected to the computer with a cord. The Bluetooth dongle must be purchased in addition to the Bit Kit.

Is there any chance that native bluetooth connectivity on my laptop could replace the bluetooth dongle?
Hi Tyler,
Great question! Native bluetooth for Mac will be supported starting in November 2019. Because of the large variability in computers running Windows, we can only provide consistent Bluetooth support for Windows by using the dongle. You must have the dongle to use Bluetooth in Windows with the Hummingbird Bit and Finch 2.
Thanks for the update Jenna!
